YEMAYA'S CHILDREN

Video and Photos by Jett Houtz

Blanket, Fabric, Acrylic paint, Pillows, Flowers, Watermelon, Fabric, Cowrie shells. Film. Altar.

This is an installation utilizing a multitude of pieces and mixed mediums. It is made in response to the night of the election of 2024. Gabriella, an afro-cuban artist from Miami, showcases an African deity named Yemaya, the mother of deities and of the ocean itself, and she creates an installation experience that conveys comfort and a mother's warmth with the blankets, pillows, and flowers. The goal was to uplift young black and Afro-Hispanic girls with a tapestry that embodies a universal mother to African descendants. But then showcased in this experience is a film that we see and hear conflict and distress, illustrating the distress of modern-day black women. This project aims to express the artist's distress as a young black woman and show how embracing her culture, heritage, and history can uplift her to continue creating art.
